Some Facts About Homelessness

A 2003 survey by the Ventura County Homeless and Housing Coalitions (VCHHC) revealed the following findings: the majority of homeless in Ventura County are women and children; the homeless population is growing – 51% were newly homeless (6 months or less); people are remaining homeless longer- 37% homeless 2 or more years compared to 28% in 2002; disabled people comprise 1/3 of the sheltered population; those sheltered are long time County residents –59% have lived locally for 10 years or more; and 34% were working at least part time but were not making a living wage. Rapidly growing housing rents have outpaced the growth in wages leaving more families, particularly single working mothers, behind.
